Biography

Antony Augoustakis (B.A. University of Crete 1994, Ph.D. Brown 2001) is Professor of Classics and University Scholar in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (2019-2022). He served as Interim Director of the School of Literatures, Cultures & Linguistics (2022) and Associate Director (2021-22). He is affiliated with the Program of Medieval Studies, the Program in Comparative and World Literature, the  Program for Translation and Interpreting Studies, and Media and Cinema Studies. His research interests include Latin imperial epic, Roman drama and historiography, women in antiquity, and gender theory. He is the author of Silius Italicus, Punica 3 (with Joy Littlewood, Oxford University Press, 2022), Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica 8 (by Cristiano Castelletti, edited with Marco Fucecchi and Gesine Manuwald, Oxford University Press, 2022), Silius Italicus' Punica: Rome’s War with Hannibal (with Neil Bernstein, Routledge, 2021), Statius, Thebaid 8 (Oxford University Press, 2016), Motherhood and the Other: Fashioning Female Power in Flavian Epic (Oxford University Press, Oxford Readings in Classical Literature and Gender Theory, 2010) and Plautus’ Mercator (Bryn Mawr Latin Commentaries, 2009). He is the editor of many collections of essays, among others: Dynamics of Marginality: Liminal Characters and Marginal Groups in Neronian and Flavian Literature (co-edited with Konstantinos Arampapaslis, Stephen Froedge, and Clayton Schroer, Walter de Gruyter, May 2023), Silius Italicus and the Tradition of the Roman Historical Epos (with Marco Fucecchi, Brill, 2022), Screening Love and War inTroy:Fall of a City (with Monica Cyrino, Bloomsbury, 2022),Fides in Flavian Literature (with Claire Stocks and Emma Buckley, University of Toronto Press, 2019), Campania in the Flavian Poetic Imagination  (co-edited with R. He is completing a monograph on death and ritual in Flavian epic and is also working on a commentary on the Pseudo-Virgilian Ciris. He is the former editor of Illinois Classical Studies and the Classical Journal.
